Milestones

2022

Opening of the new Wendlingen-Ulm line: The new line will significantly speed up long-distance traffic at the start of the new timetable on December 11, thus making an important contribution to more traffic on climate-friendly rail. In the future, trains will be able to cross the Swabian Alb at high speed. This will not shorten the travel time between Stuttgart and Munich significantly.

Massive improvement of services on the Magistrale: Since the beginning of 2022, a Nightjet runs three times a week from Vienna to Paris, operated by ÖBB in cooperation with SNCF and DB. On Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, there will be direct connections from Vienna Central Station via St. Pölten, Linz, Salzburg and Munich to Karlsruhe, Strasbourg, Nancy and Paris Gare de l’Est.

2021

Completion of the Filstal Bridge on the 120-kilometer Wendlingen-Ulm new line. The Filstal Bridge, which is around 500 meters long and 85 meters high, is the third-highest railroad bridge in Germany and the top bridge in Baden-Württemberg.

2020

Stuttgart will become Germany’s first digital rail hub. Phase I: Equipping the S-Bahn fleet on the main line/inner S-Bahn nodes with ETCS Level 2 by 2025. Phase II: Transferring the results of the pilot project to the region.
