Rail Sections

Plans and/or financing to upgrade or construct of the following sections of the Main Line have not yet been secured:

Strasbourg-Karlsruhe

Current status:

Strasbourg-Rheinbrücke-Kehl leg operational since 2010 (15 km, double-track line, up to 160 km/h)

Expansion work / target status:

Upgrade of the Kehl-Appenweier leg, including the Appenweier curve (14 km, double-track line, up to 160 km/h; would reduce travel time by around three minutes), still uncertain due to lack of financing; funds available for preliminary planning.

Construction of the Rastatt Tunnel (16 km, double-track line, up to 250 km/h) approved; investment of approx. €693 million; operations scheduled to begin in 2022 with travel time reduced by around five minutes.
