Stuttgart-Ulm railway project route

Status quo:

Existing Filstal line via Geislingen (93 km, double-track, max. 160 km/h, in sections only 70 km/h), fastest travel time 56 minutes, remains.

Expansion activities / intended target state:

Stuttgart 21 (under construction since 2010): (approx. 60 km, double-track, up to 250 km/h).

Comprehensive reorganisation of the Stuttgart railway junction with a new through station, a long-distance and regional station at the airport/the Landesmesse, a new S-Bahn station and a new stabling station. The connection with the NBS Wendlingen-Ulm will halve the travel times between Stuttgart and Ulm and the airport will be reached more quickly from many parts of the country. Investment costs approx. 9.8 billion euros, planned commissioning at the end of 2025. Significant travel time gains and new direct connections in regional and long-distance traffic (e.g. Stuttgart-Ulm 27 minutes instead of 56 minutes or Karlsruhe-Ulm 64 minutes instead of 102 minutes).

New Wendlingen-Ulm line (2012 start of construction – in operation since 11.12.2022) (60 km, double-track, up to 250 km/h), travel time gain between Stuttgart-Ulm approx. 15 minutes, future fastest travel time: 42 minutes (Wendlingen – Ulm 27 minutes).

ABS/NBS Ulm-Augsburg

Status quo:

85 km, double-track, max. 300 km/h, fastest travel time 26 minutes, via Günzburg 40 minutes.

Expansion activities / Intended target state:

Since 2020, the railway project has been in the preliminary planning stage. By the end of 2024, the route favoured by DB should be available and the regional planning procedure completed. No date for commissioning so far.

ABS38: Munich – Mühldorf – Freilassing

Status quo:

Existing line Munich-Salzburg via Mühldorf: 145 km, partly single-track, partly not electrified, max. 140 km/h, fastest travel time 93 minutes.

Upgrading activities / Intended target state:

Partial double-track upgrading, electrification throughout and extension of goods train lengths are planned. The ABS Munich-Mühldorf-Freilassing is in different planning stages, some sections of the line are in the preliminary planning stage, others are already in the design planning stage. In November 2018, the Tüßling-Freilassing double-track extension and the Walpertskirchner Spange were promoted from potential demand to priority demand in the rail demand plan and are currently in the preliminary planning stage. Currently, the draft plans for the 2nd track and the electrification of the Markt Schwaben-Ampfing section as well as for the electrification of the Schwindegg-Mühldorf and Tüßling-Burghausen sections are being prepared. After completion, the ABS 38 should be able to travel at 200 km/h in sections.

A date for commissioning cannot be estimated due to the inclusion of the ABS in the Measures Act Preparation Act (MgvG).

Salzburg – LinzStatus quo:

124 km double-track, fastest travel time 68 minutes.

Expansion activities / Intended target state:

New line Salzburg-Neumarkt-Köstendorf (21 km, 16 km of which in tunnel), planned as a four-track extension, start of construction expected in 2027. Completion expected in 2040.

Four-track extension of the Wels-Linz section planned for 2017-2025.

37 km, fastest travel time 72 minutes.

Upgrading activities / Intended target state:

Vienna-Stadlau and Marchegg section will be double-tracked and electrified in sections, expected completion 2023.
